I don't think the ratings were that spectacular, though. One of the things I like about it is that it told a story — the transition of the Republic into the Empire — and left it at that. Though I would be interested to see another two-season series about, say, the end of the Empire.

While we're at it, don't begin a sentence with numerals ("ninety percent," not "90%") and don't put a hyphen between an adverb and the adjective it modifies.

No, it's still quite good. I show it every now and then in class and the students who haven't seen it yet really like it. Just make sure you avoid the director's cut.

You are both high and wrong. Spiderpig was hysterical.

I think the trailer was derailed by the stupid idea to make it seem like Franco had just invented a cure for cancer… and he was going to call it "The Cure," as though that were an edgy name. Other than that the trailer isn't terrible, though the title is clunky.

It was fine enough but nothing special. I wonder whether it would have been as well received if the previous X-franchise films hadn't been a Brett Ratner film and Wolverine. Actually come to think of it, Wolverine didn't seem that bad to me, probably because I'd heard how awful it was.

In which universe is Carla Gugino dangerous? I am completely with you on the sexy but she doesn't have an edge to her. She's more like the girlfriend/wife who's down for just about anything but gunplay or robbery.

I think that's right. Its exact meaning is shit, but it is the kind of catch-all profanity for the French, much like "fuck" is for Americans and "cazzo" (cock) is for Italians.

If I had to guess, the reason why no one talks about the Stalin apologia that is Mission to Moscow is no one watches it anymore. That, and the fact that everyone recognizes it as propaganda. Unlike Triumph of the Will, which is formally innovative, MtM is pedestrian and thus not really worthy of a second notice.

@avclub-09dbda0ec297f8e1fb8fa397efd0f70a:disqus, Broken Blossoms is not pro-interracial romance. The intertitles make perfectly clear that Yellow Man's love for her must never be consummated; as long as it is effectively platonic, it is acceptable to Griffith.
