AVClub tends to offer more intellectual criticisms about storytelling mechanics and meaning, whereas EW offers reviews based on impressions and feeling. EW probably has the more "family friendly" reviews. When they do pick out flaws, I tend to have a hard time understanding why they pick the flaws that they do.

I've read them from time to time, and they say … things. But they have value to someone, somewhere, and those people have probably learned to trust the reviews.

Perhaps what they need is a "series" review that grades the show compared to other shows. The episodes grades are then free to float based on the week to week experience.

When I consume AVClub criticism I always keep in mind that the critiques are of a certain perspective. They are not, for instance, Entertainment Weekly criticisms. The reason I continue to come here is because I find the reviews here most in tune with my own taste and viewpoint.

Jay Bauman makes the same prediction at 18:00 in this review:

Go in with low expectations. You will be pleasantly surprised.

I left John Carter with a good feeling. I can't remember the last movie I watched that ended with the action hero marrying the girl.

I think John Carter could take a lesson from Flash Gordon. Its effectively the exact same story.

And a weird generic title to boot.

That was cathartic seeing that JCM logo over mars.

Well, it was fun. But there were some moments in the middle where I was checking my watch, which isn't a good sign. But its the first movie in a while that I've wanted to see again, despite its flaws.

Is that on the titles or the movies themselves?

"John Carter" is a terrible name for a movie.

I'm going to forgive the storytelling because the source material is pretty silly. I'm just hoping its fun.

You must be right, because I find that Electric Six video less disgusting than this trailer.

Wow, I can't believe it. I love a good satire, and mashups are great. I thought I might like this, but I genuinely felt disgust watching this trailer. I guess I just found out where my personal line of patriotism and respect for history is!

"post-Pabst morning diarrhea-mind all over the screen"
an apt description

I remember liking them, but also wondering why the movie was spending so much time with them. I think the exact same criticism applies to Jar Jar.

Seriously! I'll take Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan walking off to fight Darth Maul because he's a bad guy over Luke refusing to kill his father even though he knows it means he'll be killed by the emperor ANY DAY.

Thanks for explaining Lana Del Rey! I sleep a little better knowing that her current notoriety is more artificial then buoyed by an enormous fan base.
