I agree that they're not really soul mates, they're just an easy connection to make as strangers in a strange land. They may or may not KNOW they're aren't soul mates — it's hard to say how much their feelings for each other and their dissatisfaction in their current relationships cloud their judgement.
I'm going to have to re-watch it. I haven't seen it since that time frame and I've had a sinking feeling that it won't hold up on rewatch… but the overwhelming consensus seems to be that it definitely, definitely will.
