In my own writing, I've had the word crossed out and replaced with "use" so many times by editors that I instantly notice when other people use it. (No offense, of course. Generally, your writing is what keeps me coming…

I'd recommend the first novel anyway (I haven't read the second or third). The writing could be better (it sometimes descends into pointlessly over-descriptive passages), but the characters and the plot more than make up for it.
Also, if you skip all the parts about bread, the first novel is only like 4 pages long.
