See he knows that once he actually finishes the story he's going to get the inevitable Lost, BSG, Sopranos, etc ending treatment (yes I know those are all tv shows and not book serieses).  Better to ride the wave of appreciation and do whatever the hell else you want for several years first.

Take 90% of your military budget and put it towards social programs.  Then take 1% of the remaining 10% and put it towards making kickass action movies.  Then you'll have the best health care, schools, etc in the world and you'll have a smaller military so that other countries can actually be scary and make good…
