I came across this stuff when I was 16 (as A Raleighite, it was mostly by way of Whiskeytown comparisons) and Parson's music still keeps cropping up and creeping into my life when I'm not looking. It's the type of thing that prepares your ears for Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle down the road.

True. Rhino released an amazing 2-disc anthology about 10 years ago that collects all of GP/FBB/ISB/Byrds high points into one densely-sublime package. "Sacred Hearts and Fallen Angels." I think it is out of print now, but it is the perfect one-stop spot for all the best things about Parsons.
