Cody's Books was a huge, decades-old locally owned institution in the South Campus (Berkeley) area when I lived a block away during the 1980s. Closed, to much wailing and gnashing of teeth, a few years ago. At least Moe's is still open - 4 floors of books!

There's a big push now to fix up the "mid-Market" area between Powell Street. And they're making slow steps in trying to get cars to stay out of the Market Street downtown area, to make more room for buses, commercial vehicles, taxis and bicycles.
I'd like a car-free Market Street. It'd take a lot of traffic…
