I do not watch sports by choice.  I do enjoy an entertaining sports movie.  E.g., I loathe golf; I enjoyed Tin Cup.

Except Stalin, Mao, et al. didn't really follow Marx.  (As I discovered to my surprise, when I started reading Marx trying to find where he said all the stuff about worshiping the State and supressing dissent and debate and rounding up people & killing them, and found none of that and plenty of the opposite…)

I'll take sides with a social-gospel-preaching evangelical christian or liberation theologist over an Ayn Rand-spouting anarcho-capitalist any day of the week, and twice on Saturday.

I also had a transformative religious experience. After not knowing anything about Judaism or even that I was Jewish, at age 11 my mom brought me to synagogue for the first time.  And while I understood not one word of the stuff being spoken in not-English or the weird symbols on the page I was looking at, at some

I don't know if you consider KFOG (San Francisco) "mainstream" but it's a big station.  They play The Decemberists sometimes.

And then "Dean Grey" mashed up "Doctorin' the Tardis" (itself a mashup of Rock and Roll Part II with the Dr Who theme) with Green Day's "Holiday" (and a couple other samples) to make "Dr Who On Holiday" - which may only be a hit on my 'pod, but it is.

It was in Repo Man iirc
and dammit, why didn't I see @edked's comment to that effect, even though I'd hit "refresh" before commenting to make sure that didn't happen?

If one's daily TV schedule = Jeopardy!, the Jon & Stephen News Hour, and the actual 10 o'clock news, supplemented with four or five hours of weekly programming such as gets discussed here at AVClub, and a few movies, is that "100% passive-receptive"? Even if one answers the Jeopardy! clues in the form of a question?

Baseball is a sport made for radio, particularly when you're a kid and your dad's washing the car with the transistor radio 0n. Calming.

You are aware, of course, that "Uncle Tio" is redundant.

@Toasterlad - I second that.

It's funny reading this threat, while I sit at the computer. While high on weed. On the internet - and what "the internet is for".

Okay, when I first saw the picture, it looked like a talis/tallit (tomato/tomahto). But then I saw, on the lower right-hand corner, how the grey line cuts across, like the end of a shirt-collar. The biggest, ugliest shirt-collar I can remember seeing.

I've never been good at sports; asthma prevents me from running much. I did okay at soccer (playing defense) in elementary school, and volleyball in high school. In PE I picked "anything other than what the jocks are into".

Sweet! Thank you!

@Archmage: No wonder she's tired.

I have the same reaction here as on (gods help me) Yahoo! News comments. "I suspect you're joking, but it's hard to tell, since so many [Yahoo! commenters / high-concept artistes] say the same shit, and mean every word."

And I have seen none of Gallo's films (other than the Brown Bunny clip, which is available for free), so I have no opinion one way or another whether he's a good filmmaker or not. Nor am I in a hurry to acquire one.

"If I draw a picture and then keep it to myself, am I being a 'douche' or 'pretentious'?"

You cannot lose if you do not play.
