yes, agreed on your last point. like 'in the cards', a really good episode made super great by its positioning within the story arc and the season. they needed these 'character' stories to balance out the action stuff

ditto to the main thesis of the thread. lufton was ok, and the character of jake was important to build sisko's world. i really like jake as a character and as a 'person'. young people are often awkward idiots, so even jake's weirder moments ring true.

On the flip side of all of this, there are those people happy to walk around MOMA or something talking about "How is this ART my 5 year old could do this! yadda yadda… This anti-elitist reaction (which i myself have had) should also be discouraged - it's worth trying to understand and consider why some weird things…
