What beats the hell out of me is this: if Pi was the tiger all along, what was the deal with the island full of tasty but lethal algae? I have a feeling it's kind of obvious, but I just can't see it from here.

I haven't seen the film but I did read the book and pretty much disregarded the 'twist' ending as an afterthought (because it's essentially an 'it was all a dream' ending, which is always lame). However, I think you've come as close as is possible to making the book make sense to me.
