At the very least, Tim Burton did state that the ending "wasn't supposed to make any sense" — that it would all be explained in a sequel… directed, presumably, by someone other than Burton.

I have a real issue with the "Likes" counter — namely, there is no "Dislikes" counter.  It's sort of like saying Oklahoma City scored 106 points in Game 5 of the NBA final — it sounds impressive until you discover there was another team playing.
