Merry Christmas!!!! Ho, ho, ho. Etc.
Merry Christmas!!!! Ho, ho, ho. Etc.
Incidentally
I didn't want my copy editor to have to work on Christmas (the child slaves in my sweatshops aren't so lucky) so I apologize in advance for any typos, misspellings or grammatical errors.
Thanks
for returning to "ANTB". You totally satiated my very mild curiosity about who would end up on top. I was surprised to see that Denver And The Mile High Orchestra made it that far. They'd barely hack it as a wedding band. If they're the best we have to offer then we're in a sorry state musically. I was mildly…
I was
struck by how few jokes there are in the episode's Rutles song. It's fucking hilarious and absolutely brilliant but mainly because it's such a genius, pitch-perfect pastiche of early Beatles songs, not because it's jokey or has conventional punchlines.
I fucking blanked on "Red" and "White". They're both fine films but there were just so many winners from that year that some got lost in the shuffle.
I apologize
if this comes off a little dry. The joke-monkey aspect of my writing will return soon to MYOF, possibly with a vengeance, possibly without.
Thanks for the 411 and the link. It sounds intriguing in a dated, you-had-to-be-there kinda way but compelling all the same.
The comic
I'm interested in seeing what people think of the comic "Howard the Duck" is based on. How do fans of the comic feel about the movie? Did they fuck it up old school? Was the comic book overrated? Good? Bad? I really know nothing about it so I'm interested in seeing what comic buffs think of the whole Howard…
was definitely a contender for this list. I basically had to choose between it and "The Number 23" so Carrey made the list and "I Know Who Killed Me" became my "Future Film That Time Forgot" in our big year-end piece.
Yeah, I saw something about a tenth episode on Wikipedia (featuring guest star Gladys Night, alas without her Pips) but it seemed kind of sketchy. January tenth can't come quick enough, say I!
Thanks. I fixed at least some of the typos. Others I mysteriously decided to leave in. Or did I?
Any particular typos you want me to fix?
Spoiler alert!
Oh shit, it's probably too late for that.
Also
those chipmunks really look like they could really use a Frappuccino. They're in a CGI kids film, for fuck's sake. Have a heart, folks!
It should be noted
that David Cross has appeared in a lot of good shit since "Mr. Show" ended: "Ghost World", "I'm Not There", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Arrested Development" and also that Michel Gondry short film where he played Michel Gondry's Nazi feces. Seriously, check out the Michel Gondry…
is great but I think it has too good a critical reputation to qualify for this feature. And to answer the commenter who asked for more detail on why I deemed this film a success there's a lot of great show-biz stuff in the first hour and a half, including great supporting performances from gravel-voiced Lionel…
Incidentally
I've seen this twice in the past year and a half and liked it alot more the second time around. It's not for everyone but it definitely is a grower.
Yeah I think if you're a student of comedy there's a lot to be learned from these early seasons. When I interviewed Conan O'Brien a while back he said he'd sometime stumble across an old SNL that he'd work on and think "Huh, I wonder if we came up with a good ending for this?" and was forever disappointed. I think if…
Yeah it's not all great but I agree that it's fascinating seeing what didn't work and what has been more or less purged from the show's official history (the Muppets, weird varietyesque players, Gary Weis' short films). I find that the show is dated in a really fascinating way. Each episode occupies a very specific…
UGK
is one of those acts I've always felt bad not knowing more about, especially after reading "The Third Coast", Roni Sarig's terrific history of Southern hip hop. It made me want to go out and buy about a hundred CDs, as did "This Band Could Be Your Life". When I interviewed T.I not long ago he called UGK, Scarface…
