Dollar theaters are also huge with college students. There's one in Independence, MO that gets a ton of Kansas City traffic - I went to 21 Jump Street when it came out there and it was sold out.

It was never required reading, but it was always on those "good books for kids/teens!" reading lists we got at the library. I got a really nice hardback copy from my dad when I turned 12, and that's when I first read it, which was appropriate.

I grew up on Louis Sachar's Wayside School books, so I was hesitant to read Holes. Now, it's a book I come back to every few years. It's surprisingly complex and emotionally nuanced for a YA book.
