Every episode has been written by Mike White. This IS auteur TV.

Well, there are other benefits: Creatives feel more comfortable going to Fox knowing they support shows. Somewhat of a steady scripted presence on Fridays. A cheap 5th season they didn't lose money on.

That's irrelevant, especially when Happy Endings is co-produced by ABCStudiosm, which shares a parent company with ABC-the-network.

I know that FanFare (the pod that produces Happy Endings) has approached Comedy Central, TBS, E!, and Bravo about possible syndication deals if/when the show gets a fourth season. I imagine it would fit the Comedy Central or E! brand very well.

B—— please, Happy Endings is fantastic television!

All. Fringe has had worse ratings than Happy Endings. Yet Fringe will still make money for the studio in the long run because of its syndication deal with the low-rated Science Channel and with Netflix. If Happy Endings gets canceled, a lot of people lose a lot of money. That's why it's very myopic to cancel a show

The cancellation for Apt23 is pretty harsh barley, though.

Did the B stand for Bitch? I guess we'll never know without a proper series finale.

Right, yeah, that was the "pulling a Coach", like in New Girl.

I thought Jeananne Goossen was going to be mediocre, but holy hell. She was terrible. Why even bother keeping her in? Why not just full-on recast the part and not pull a Coach?

I really liked this episode (and this show).

That's also true. Premiering with a 1.4 on cable gets you 4 or 5 more seasons. Premiering with a 1.4 on network TV gets you Lone Star.

@avclub-2300d8171ca46be1ee5a72d2837c1b6d:disqus I agree, I was more speaking towards "It's on Fox it's never going to live passed one season!" line of thinking. Firefly was almost a decade ago.

@avclub-eac75edc18b8546c46893fe4b75ab995:disqus I was very, very excited for Vegas. I thought it was going to be my new procedural. I have the same fears for Golden Boy — a very interesting concept that's going to be ruined by network notes to play it safe.

See, I don't think it's hard to get around the 22 episode angle. You treat each like an 11 episode season that you're constructing at once. We've already gotten to the point where networks build up "fall finales" and "spring premieres". There's a natural cliff hanger.

The most frustrating aspect of this truth is that the loglines of certain dramas that have been greenlighted this year (Last Resort, 666, Following, The Mob Doctor, Revolution, Deception, Vegas) lend to storytelling that has the potential to be nuanced, through-provoking and mature about their respective subject

Aren't we ready to retire this line of thinking yet?

I'd rather see something a show (or probably a film) that has an earnest look at what makes a killer and explores the mental health and maybe the isolation that transforms someone who is so fragile to someone who becomes this person bent on destruction. Maybe serial killers are just unsustainable as characters on TV

I've never seen it, but Wikipedia says it was created by Tim Minear and Howard Gordon, so I say you're wrong!
