The major problem that I have with it is that it assumes an author's intent, which we can never genuinely know. Talk about the work on its own terms and why it succeeded or failed for you, rather than what you think the author's intentions were and how she failed them.

I think everything else you said about Crash is way more interesting than claiming that it's pretentious. I always wonder when someone uses that word, what's the offending pretense, and why is it a problem? It does have a straightforward definition, but it's a criticism of an author not a work. A writer can be pretentious, but a book can't. So not knowing who the author is, calling a book pretentious just implies that you didn't like it because it was hard to read.
