Consistent visual style and consistent writing. I'm not saying his movies are bad, but the adjective I took issue with was "innovative," not "masterful" or "substantial." When you keep doing the same thing, you stop being innovative pretty much by definition, even if what you do is very good.

Does Wes Anderson really get to be called "innovative" when he's essentially been doing the same thing, just more so, since The Royal Tenenbaums?
