We knew *about* Rory immediately in that we knew he was a character and he was dating Pond. But initially he was a kind of a pathetic nebbish who wasn't good enough for her and who even Pond seemed embarrassed by. I remember years ago when Xerox had a similar marketing push to refer to the machines as "copiers" because people were talking about Ricoh xerox machines and Canon xerox machines. It worked too. Everyone I know says "copiers" now rather than "xerox machines"
