I thought it was that colleges played punk and new wave in the late 70s and eraly 80s (which did indeed have lots of mainstream success — Elvis Costello, The Police, The Go-Gos, Talking Heads, etc.)

I loved that Walt mentioned he checks the value of Grey Matter every week.  Which is just a constant wound to his ego every week.  Makes his turn in the first season more believable for me (always seemed too quick for me.)
