I think the Trek franchise got a little better over time dealing with kids - certainly it could only go up from Wesley.  I agree that the Ben / Jake relationship felt real and was probably the best type of that kind of relationship shown in a trek series, but the little girl (even if she was annoying) on Voyager was

I actually thought she was a closet Romulan the whole time - it would have fit her character better.  Agreed that it was a bizarre and very poor handling of a Vulcan.

He had parts in I'm Gonna Git you Sucka, Revenge of the Nerds, Spies like Us, Amazon Women on the Moon, Never say Never Again - and whole bunch of blaxploitation movies from the 70s.

Do they really?  To the same degree that people hate Glee or Girls?

Yeah it's interesting, I was surprised to see how many people disliked him in this role since I thought he worked pretty well. Especially the scene where Dukat shows the confession you can tell Calvin is getting more and more pissed off at the situation, which pushes him into joining the Maquis at the end.

Except for Alexander, who is apparently still waiting for his testicles to descend.

Bernie Casey has got to rank amongst the all-time top guest stars for any Trek series.  The immediate chemistry between Calvin and Sisko is great, and his turn at the end seems entirely believable.

It's a shame too, because the Maquis / Starfleet tension that should have been an inherent and interesting part of Voyager gets defused fairly early in the show's run.

On the positive side - if people hate something it means that at least it's provoking a deep emotional response, albeit probably not the one that the creators would prefer.  No one hates  Ryan Seacrest because he's so blindingly mediocre and seemingly focus-group-tested-and-approved that the most negative thing anyone

YES!!!  I got suckered into going to a Cy Twombly exhibition at the Tate Modern in London and hated it.  A few weeks later I was visiting a friend in Munich and we went to this new modern art museum, and lo and behold another (different!) Cy Twombly exhibition that was equally as awful.

All I'm saying is, this movie had better have the wonder twins, and had better have a villain whose secret weakness is having a bucket of water thrown on his head by a monkey.  Or it will be an abject failure.
