I think Betty wants Sandy to find and fulfill her dreams, but in a way that's self-empowered. Hence, Betty's emphasis on Sandy's finishing school and advice that living in low-rent, crowded conditions in NYC won't live up to Sandy's romanticized ideal.

Funny you mention that.  This ep's discussion of the Vietnam War and of the G.I.s' making necklaces of V.C.s' ears reminded me that "The Walking Dead" made three references  (that I noticed) to Vietnam:
