Personally as a person who writes about this stuff it is (selfishly) far more interesting to discuss gender and feminism in relation to smart shows that are really trying because there's just more meat there. How can and should shows set in the past deal with racial diversity? Is Game Of Thrones exploiting its female

For the record, I didn't mean to imply Black Widow is a one-dimensional character. I love her deeply and she's probably my favorite female superhero at the moment (sorry Jean Grey).

This is the best idea I've ever heard.

If you're interested in sci-fi, Star Trek Voyager has really great female characters. And while there are plenty of storytelling flaws that adults might see, I think it's the Trek that's most immediately accessible to kids.

I looked it up after the movie and while male chimps do lead their tribes or groups or whatever, apparently the female chimps will sometimes join together to overthrow a male leader they dislike. I would have LOVED to see something like that in the film. I totally agree with your wife's point that it's so weird for a

I love everything about this exchange, including being called out on my monkey misnomer.

I adore Helen O'Hara, formerly of Empire Magazine, who is still on their podcast. Bitch Flicks is a great feminist film site and far more nuanced then their name might suggest. The three dude who co-host the Cinematic Universe Podcast are really great male feminists. And I think Caroline Framke's stuff is always great.

Truth.

Co-sign so hard! Dredd is amazing. Both as a film and for its great female representation.

Considering 99% of what I write for this site is Game Of Thrones GJIs, I totally agree!

I think what you're describing is a film review, which I don't generally write for this site but which a lot of smart critics do. This piece is more of an op-ed about feminist criticism as a whole. If this were a newspaper I would agree it should be placed in the editorial section so I think we're in agreement here.

All great points! That's why I love being able to discuss stuff like this without having to pick sides. Thoughtful analysis is always helpful in my book.

Yes! Fun fact: The whole idea for this article came from discussions I had in the comments section so thanks to y'all!

Well said!

I try to give TCM (or at least a classic movie) a shout-out every week in my WOT!

Back in my day we had Wind Whistler, Lickety-Split, and Fizzy. I can't keep up with all this newfangled stuff!

While it was most definitely not a spec script before this, I will admit I got SUPER into the idea while trying to figure out a way for Orlando Jones and Tyler James Williams to play brothers despite their big age gap. Expect it in movie theaters by 2020.

Oh you better believe I triple checked that before posting it! (Also, I made sure to spell it Qo’noS rather than the technically-correct but somewhat lamer Kronos.)

Christian Vanderveld is shckingly good as a commentator! It's so cool to hear his perspective on what's going on with the rider's psychological and physically.

For what it's worth, Sam's email was the highlight of my day. The mix of ennui and optimism charmed me to no end.
