It's certainly possible that on some subconscious level Crockett was trying to martyr himself; after all, he went to Texas as his political career was falling apart back in Tennessee.

How much of that is point of view, though? We root for the crafty scoundrels, because they're usually protagonists or friends; how often do we get crafty cowards who are nonetheless presented as allies, given a sympathetic portrayal?

This is part of why I really liked the little scene where Garak, Damar, and Kira (and two other Cardassian rebels) discover they need a bigger bomb to break into the Dominion HQ, and just burst out laughing.

The computer simulation was not like this. That delivery was very orderly!
