I'd actually go with William Baldwin, it would be more dramatic interesting having Tripp dealing with the fact that his one son that could achieve the sort respectabilty and success he hped for turned out not to be his. Glad to see someone point that the original despite it's classic status is far from a great piece of cinema. I haven't seen the new one yet, but I most confess I'm sort of glad that it's failing; there's something so cynical about it, the way it very much looks like a producer package for an arthouse smash.

Among Lehane's 5 Kenzie novels, #1, 3 and 5 deals with very twisted family histories and their effect on children, #2 is heavy on Kenzie's childhood memories, and #4 (Gone baby Gone) ius about a missing kid and her awful mother, so yes it's a subject he is pretty obsessed with.
