Yeah, I picked up the book because I suspect that's when a lot of Chinese (and Chinese American) political apathy/even fear really took shape. Such a crushing blow.
Yeah, I've encountered that. Especially on (sometimes) civil message boards for the Economist or something. But it was shocking to see the activists go along with that apathy sometimes. It makes sense, but it felt about as existentialist as any Beckett I've read.
I also got to attend a talk between Aleksandar Hemon and Junot Diaz, two of my favorite authors. It was a fantastic discussion on the value of reading, knowing your history, and their parents' journies as immigrants.
