That manor keeps bothering me as well, although I was more startled by the fact that the final fight scene with China White appeared to be taking place in the Temple of the Five (or at least a location that was remarkably similar looking).

I always forget how cynical and blackly comic Dahl's adult stories are, but whenever I have the chance to look through by big onmnibus of his short stories I always walk away amazed.

@avclub-16db446cafb1ffb1466e71eaf97a4f49:disqus  I'm not sure why the monetary stuff did not attract my attention.  I think it was just that I have had to lecture to undergraduates on 17th century Spanish silver, inflation, and early modern monetary policy so often that it sort of seemed like old hat.

I have wondered about the recipe bit myself…do they get to use cookbooks of some kind?  They never show them looking anything up, but when you are baking a souffle or something of that nature I'm guessing that, even if you know the basic ingredients, you would like to have a handy list of measurements, since, really,
