I was under the impression that the network does get proceeds from long-term stuff (not as much as the studio) as part of the agreement of airing things in the first place. Entirely possible I'm wrong about that.

Isn't this pretty short term thinking? I mean, shows like Community and Parks and Rec do get worse ratings than this sort of broad multi-cam stuff (though both shows seem to pull healthier ratings than Guys with Kids, at least looking at Community last year), but I'd think those shows are FAR more likely to bring in

Yeah, this season Happy Endings and B23 definitely DO have this exact problem. Critical acclaim but extremely low Nielsen ratings. Don't count on them to be around much longer.
And, as mentioned, the other examples are cable shows.
