Lots of Twilight Imperium love right here. It's hard to convince new players to commit (4-6 hours is what you tell 'em, but really its more like 8 -10) but once you do everyone has a grand old time. Its the only game I can lose badly at and still come away thinking I have done something truly memorable and unique.

Most of the first book is set in Rome and is about the deep history of human societies and their development. The series (called Destiny's Children) then expands outwards, upwards

To be fair, the fact that the Gwyneth character was not taken into crazier directions is probably more down to the fact that Amy Phillips was trying to play off Scot Aukerman (an anti-improviser from the "no-maybe" school) and Andy Kindler (from the "no-look at me!" school)
