I agree that VO works pretty well when the narrator is a "character" who does not appear in the movie/show. Arrested Development and The Royal Tenenbaums are maybe the best examples of that for me.

Right, if they were actual people, I would probably not like them (well, except Maeby and George Michael). But as characters, I find them all completely lovable despite their moral failings. They're just so charming and hilarious and sometimes very deeply stupid. They are precious to me.
