Outside of Australia   —-  understandably  —-  I've never heard of anyone being afraid of spiders, apart from the 'joke' in certain sitcoms causing scared men to get their women to deal with the little fellows, which seems a singularly feeble instance of *subversion*;  and in Tolkien.
