That's an interesting point - I'm the exact opposite. I definitely engage with a show through its fandom, because I love discussing everything to death. However, I own no collectors' items of any sort (unless t-shirts count, but the point there for me is to connect with other people who recognise them, so I'd say that

I have no idea, but wikipedia says not originally, although they've used it.

Huh, how odd. What did they say?

I nearly listed Marty as another example of this type I like. But I'm the other way round - I think I like Marty more because I'm seeing Topher…

There's nobody in the main crew I really dislike - I find Simon a little bland at times, but I love him in wry or slightly off-kilter mode, as seen in Jaynestown or OiS.

True enough. I guess what I meant was it's a mentality that makes a lot of sense in this scenario, and that's why I'm fine with it here. I don't know if it's just a nod to Western tropes - there's a bit too much emphasis on it, particularly by the time the film rolls round, for it to be purely a way to evoke the genre

No, I haven't - I'm aware that I should, and a friend even lent me some but I was too busy/distracted to get into it at the time and eventually had to give it back before she beat down my door demanding its return. It's on my 'get back to it some day' list.
