I'm sure my memory of people from when I was ten is pretty limited, but you've got to imagine that Richard made an impression on Locke considering how odd that test was. Also, since he doesn't age, Richard looks exactly the same as he did when Locke saw him as a kid, so that should've triggered his memory too.
