"THAT'S THE GUY SHE LEAVES HER FAMILY FOR? I wouldn't give up everything for that tool bag" is the same reaction I had over and over again based on the character of Vronsky in the book. I wouldn't give up *anything*, he's an annoying fop whose only character traits are being in love with Anna and sometimes thinking

Just saw the movie and had the same reactions as all of you - Oblonsky is such a wonderful character in the book, the same personality does come across in the movie but it is so brief and we don't really get a sense of him as a real person the way we do in the book, so it's frustrating. I totally agree he's one of the

I feel the same way about the Levin storyline, but I don't think it is necessarily a cynical point of view. To my mind the point is that he is very relatable and human. For example, although he is very idealistic, when he goes to Moscow, he falls into all these pretentious intellectual debates, participates in club

That fucking song. How does it not piss everyone off that it has the same title as a MUCH BETTER Elliott Smith song? It's irritating enough on its own, but the fact that I never ever hear anyone be like 'Oh, I thought that was already the title of a song' is really the icing on the cake.

@avclub-6a2ec3076bb494e5c64eb1a422d9fe3d:disqus It's interesting because the Levin/Kitty is much more of a "young person's" story - Kitty is 18, right? - while Anna is 30ish. But yes, I think that's a good observation.

I do sympathize with the fact that, if you were in this loveless marriage with an unfulfilling life and you had the chance at this great romance, you'd want to go for it (as "fun" as high society is and as possible as affairs and divorce were, people were definitely "trapped in marriage" to a much greater extent than

I just read Anna Karenina. I had started reading it three or four years ago but didn't get through more than like a third. Inspired by the film release I finally read it over the past week or so. I really liked it, but I'm still struggling to find Anna sympathetic or her affair with Vronsky very meaningful or

Attack the Block was my favorite movie of 2011. I wish people talked about it more.

That looks like a very cool Getty exhibit. My art/culture highlight of the year was going to the Leopold Museum in Vienna which has Egon Schiele and Klimt exhibits (Kokoschka too, whom I also like a lot). I tend to prefer his later work that looks more like Schiele, because Schiele is my favorite. It was even possibly

I got a new pair of Christmas socks. I'm wearing them right now. They're red and have white snowflakes, green wrapped packages and "Ho! Ho! Ho!" all over them, and at the top on either side they have a smiling cat in a Christmas scarf. They're awesome.
