I saw Looper on Saturday night and yesterday I went to see The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Honestly? I surprised myself by really liking it. I was interested in all the articles about it before it actually came out here, and was feeling quite critical of the book, concept, teenagers, etc.

I could not read A Pale Fire. It was just too pretentious to go on with and I couldn't deal with it. (As discussed in the Looper review, I therefore can't have a legitimate opinion of it, which I'll go along with.) To be honest, I can't really read ANYTHING by Nabokov anymore even though I loved it in high school.

I agree The Idiot isn't a great first Dostoevsky book even though I love, love, love it. I read Crime & Punishment in high school but didn't understand it, then Brothers Karamazov, then The Idiot, then reread Crime & Punishment and Brothers Karamazov and Notes From Underground for Dostoevsky class, now I'm reading

Yeah, I don't care whether or not someone walks out, I have walked out of movies, but I would not participate in discussion of a movie's merits if I walked out after twenty minutes. About an hour, maybe. I walked out of (watching on DVD) American Psycho, I know a ton of people love that movie, it's really not for me,

That's a good point about making sure that they get their own payouts. I didn't think of that.

I too liked both its "rudimentary" look and that they didn't explain it.

@Scrawler2:disqus Yes, it is a really, really fantastic movie - Emir Kusturica (Underground, When Father Was Away On Business, lots of other great movies) but this one is my favorite. It's really hard to find though - I don't think it's on DVD, VHS only (really). Well, it looks like it is on DVD, but just region 2.

That's not a bad theory. I didn't even think of that.

Yeah, that's pretty dumb. How can you "hate" a movie you watched 20 minutes of and then act like this is a legitimate opinion?

I agree. I had a really hard time feeling any sympathy whatsoever for Bruce Willis. The stuff w/his wife, a little bit, but in general, eh.

Have you guys seen Time of the Gypsies? @Scrawler2:disqus's comment brought to mind that it actually has a LOT of similar themes to Looper. (Selling your children, vowing not to do the same things to the next generation then doing it anyway, telekinesis, demimondes, blah blah blah.) I wonder if Rian Johnson has seen
