Yes! King Tropes is exactly the phrase for it that I had in mind.
Classic King would have let us see it from her perspective, and what was going on in her mind. 
It's almost the opposite of what we see here, from an outsiders perspective, not knowing why a character does something.

Idiocy, yes, but maybe:
It's kind of a Stephen King thing, though, along with the blood-thirsty religious kooks(The Mist, Dome) and people thinking they are communicating with something(Needful Things, Dome), or just doing something in a trance, and not knowing why.

Revolution and Bates Motel are big ones here, too.

I don't want to say anything bad, because I love it here.

New Girl is great, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine has great potential and a great cast.
