It was a little too operatic for American audiences though.  You would need to ground it a little bit.  I think you could keep the basic plot intact.  Also there is no way they make the hammer scene anywhere near as good.  They just shouldn't try and should do something different in that part of the story.

Also its hard to hate The Pearl as a high school reading assignment since the book takes like 2 hours to read. My feeling about The Pearl is its a less interesting version of The Old Man and the Sea, but otherwise a quick and interesting read.

Re: Catcher, I read it when I was a freshman in college. I remember wondering why everyone thought it was so great. I can understand why its a classic, but I totally don't get why it caught on as some sort of teenage subcultural thing.
