Well, Ben Swain was a nutter, and Malcolm was anti-nutter until their rise was inevitable, so I imagine Ben always sees Malcolm as "old guard".

Agreed. I think these last two episodes have been nearly perfect, but the first two were only so-so. If it keeps building like it has, then I'll be more than willing to say it's on par with Series 3.

This was the greatest example of Malcolm's puppet mastery since Spinners and Losers, for sure. Machiavelli could learn from Malcolm Tucker.
