Classic rock stations know this and are bifurcating. In my mid-sized city there are two big classic rock stations - one does Thin Lizzy and Clapton, one does Quiet Riot and Collective Soul. The non longhair 90's mostly belong to the alt-rock station.

Oh and regarding the 'cliche' aspect - kind of like how I felt about Robert Plant when I first heard him as an adolescent in the 80s - "How cliche, another long blond haired rock and roll high-pitched screamer."
