I’m a particular fan of using speech over alternate shots of the characters where they are lost in thought, as well as the flashes of memories that crop up as though they cannot be contained.

The answer could also be that all of the above are nighttime soaps and none are quality dramas. Unlike, say, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Americans, and Justified, which (with one exception) also have the sad fact in common that they will all be off the air by the end of this summer.
I actually thought it was an excellent episode, probably in part because it was Cami-free.
