Even more than sympathetic. I think it would be reasonable to argue that "Steve" was the HERO of this episode. After all, he was the one who figured out the nature of the paradox and helped the boys find their way out.
It's interesting how with, for example, Bob's Burgers the AV Club reviewer seems to get that if there are some real laughs, some nice moments, and a musical number that works and if the characters and relationships are true to what we know then that's a good to great episode.
