As a youngster (probably around 12) who first discovered the show in syndication in the late 80's/early 90's, Cheers was my first introduction to a more sophisticated kind of comedy. All of a sudden, a full swath of things I used to watch became "kid's stuff".
I'm late to the party here, but let me quickly pick at some of the leftover scraps before I get to "new business".

I remember reading that May got an outrageous sum for a week's work on Tootsie, but it was $ well spent considering IIRC she was responsible for the invention of the Bill Murray roommate character (granted, Murray supplied all of his own dialogue), and also beefing up the role of Sandy (Teri Garr).
Mulholland Dr. was 2001, and definitely had a high placement in the AV Club's best of the Aughts list
