And speaking of Guadalcanal, and southern college-rock, Dreams So Real would be a good addition to any power pop list. Their two albums are still in heavy rotation on my iTunes. They reminded me of some type of southern fusion of Badfinger and the Smithereens, with a dash of Neil Young thrown in.

Just wanted to add another voice to the "thanks for covering something off the beaten path" sentiment. I read the coverage of current shows I watch, and also enjoy the analysis of "new classics" like Buffy, Trek and others, but for those of us us older folk who grew up with 3 networks, just a few cable channels, and

That is a most excellent suggestion. Though Farscape, like Buffy, Angel, Star Trek:TNG/DS9, X-Files and several others, struggles to find its footing in the early S1 episodes, it soon becomes a top tier genre show and one ripe for analysis and discussion here. I would love it if two of my favorite AV Clubbers were to

I would characterize it as less "smug" than "perplexed" and "irritated." We still live in a world where lives are affected, laws are enacted and enforced, and human beings are denied equality and control of their own decision-making — all because of institutional belief in some nonsensical sky wizard.

Also worth noting here, the "angels" reference is a specific one. Whedon has cited Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-winning novel "The Killer Angels" (about the battle of Gettysburg) as a primary influence and inspiration for creating Firefly. Gettysburg was a victory for the Union, a turning point in the war, and probably

Both of those are good suggestions, as different as they may be. I only recently discovered Misfits, and blew through 2 seasons in a day. Definitely has the Whedon vibe.

And what happened there wasn't half as evil as what Tim Minear originally wanted: when Angel reached an orgasm, he was going to stake Darla in his bed (not a metaphor — actual wood penetrating heart and turning her to dust). Joss talked him down from that, and it eventually opened up the story for the Connor plot, so

I like the character and purpose of Eve just fine. It's just that Sarah Thompson's portrayal felt a little thin at times. I wish they had gotten their original choice for Eve — Morena Baccarin.
