I think 'you have to be high enough to enjoy it' pretty much summarizes the first six years of SNL. The Dick Ebersol era may not have been SNL's best but at least he got his cast and writers to try to conceptualize actual jokes.

The new episode was pretty good. Jones was clearly nervous for the monologue but was game for the sketches. SNL needs to either find some teeth in its political humor or stop trying to be political entirely.
