I will order that. Thanks for heads-up.

Thanks, FM. I will admit that I hated CATCH-22 the first time I read it, and the second time it pretty much immediately became my favorite book. Maybe I'll pick up SCANNER at some other time in my life and find it more of a pleasure.

No, I'll still read it. Don't worry. It still looks pretty amazing, and I like DFW's writing far better than I do PKD's. Cheer up, FiveString!

I thought that afterward would have been better omitted. It added a certain poignancy, but it did feel like a bit of a cheat.

Okay, why am I proud to be an American, again? Whew. Thanks, Leonard—I will add those books to my various Internet book wish lists, order them within the next year, eventually read at least one of them, and then be sad and angry about their subject matter for some time. That's how it works!

As for the staff's comments and questions,

No sir, I don't like it.
Overall, I really did not like this book. The conclusion I took away from it is that although Philip K. Dick is certainly a notch above most pulp science fiction writers, infusing his work with philosophy and humor and a few big ideas, he is wildly, wildly overrated. It's the same feeling I

This all supports my theory that the people behind the SAW movies have extensive experience torturing and murdering people, hence their abilities to write about it so convincingly. And that those movies are enjoyed the most by the people who also have firsthand experience being murderous psychopaths.

I really like this comment—though I bet Dick meant to address this cycle in a broader way than just between addiction and rehab—more like the way our broken society drives people to escape, then condemns and punishes them for it, further fracturing society and perpetuating the cycle.

Damnit, you just made me not want to read INFINITE JEST, and I had been looking forward to it. This book was not only my least favorite WuiB selection so far, but it pretty much turned me off to PKD and has got me liking it less every day since reading it, the more I think about it. It's an unbearably dreary read,

The IMDB FAQ page for the movie—

Cool thought—but let me think about it for a bit before I reply. The real discussion starts tomorrow! Yay!

Agreed. Even including M. Duras' 80 pages.

This movie is amazing.
It's one of my favorites.

You're probably right. But that's pretty gutless and lame.

There is an ad for the Mormon Church
beside this page. And I would just like to say, don't click on it.
They don't have answers that no one else has. They're a big dumb cult and they think emoticons and all-lower-case letters equals COOL and hip and youthful.

Correct me if I'm wrong
but I have noticed that in all the reviews for this movie, although they inevitably mention Cruise's Oprah freakout and general crazy image, none of them mention Scientology, or his insane Scientology video, or anything at all about him being one of the top-ranking and most prominent members of

Oh my I can't stop grinning.

I am voting for that story in the next election.

I've never seen so many failed firsts in one placed before. Is this a record?
