And I think that girl looks pretty hot. But that show sounds terrible and I hope I never watch it.

I can't believe people are making comments here about that girl being overweight. No wonder so many girls have eating disorders.

So you're some sort of fascist punk? What do you mean by "anybody like that": do you mean people who feel strongly about things? People who are vocally political? Because I'm certainly not a Tea Party person.

L1 (I like to call you by the nickname Roland Emmerich gave you), are you a Tea Partier?

We'll miss you, sir. But you could always stick around and elevate the discourse. You don't have to read EVERYTHING that's posted here—for instance, nothing in the world would ever make me click on something titled, for instance, "the Latest in Brittany Murphy Autopsy Reports" or the like. Stick around—the Books

I've been reading a lot of Tea Party websites…
because I'm apparently some sort of masochist, and it's interesting the backlash that's already happening toward Palin within that movement.

Are you all still going on about this? Give it up. Stop!

Exactly. If people are going to introduce anachronistic language or imagery or events into a work, it needs to be intentional and all-out: MOULIN ROUGE or CANNIBAL: THE MUSICAL for example. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in another way.

Wow. Can you say what town? The AVC community has a mayor among its ranks—how cool.

Somewhere in the world, perhaps, just maybe
there is someone who is really disappointed by who is directing this because he or she (come on, though, it's not a she) actually thought THE SMURFS MOVIE was going to be really good.

Correction: SEA LION

More than anything I see these guys
(and I only really know them from their 2008 album) as one of the most recent progenitors of the current glo-fi/chillwave sound, bands like Neon Indian, Delorean, Memory Tapes, even Best Coast, all of whom I like.

Hell, you might be right. I'll have to reread that part. I sometimes imagine whole side stories to books when I read them, and end up loving stories just as much for the worlds they allow me to play in as I do for the stories themselves.

That didn't take me out of the story at all. These boats were named by SAILORS. Goat-fucking, cabin-boy-sodomizing, village-raping, grog-swilling, Eighteenth-Century sailors.

What really would have been distracting
would have been if O'Brian HADN'T been careful about recreating the terminology of the sailors at this time and place. Think of all the movies in which no regard for proper period idiom and jargon is observed—TITANIC is a prime example—and think of how easily that pulls one out

Are you two roommates? That was really interesting, Donna and Lemur.

Question about MTV
When I was growing up, this would have been on MTV all day, or at least on MTV 2, but the last time I saw those channels they were all prime-time-style youth-oriented reality shows and an occasional list show with ten-second clips of videos and a ton of ads and host chatter. Is this sort of thing

So only things that are effortless are cool? Or appreciating something for having merit requires the effort needed to abandon one's cool? Either way, you have coolness as defined then by how little effort something requires—so I guess Youtube Fred is cool then—or expressions of gratitude and amazement being
