Let me second this recommendation. Most of the Trek tie-in fiction is just fanfiction that got published in terms of quality control, but Dark Mirror was pretty awesom. TNG-Mirror Universe was super cool.

Isn't the most reasonable explanation simply that the writers fucked up a line, and that, applying Occam's Razor, we should come to the eminently sensible conclusion that it's the Vedek's who vote for the Kai, not the general populace?

Considered dispassionately, it probably doesn't. Considered in the context of post-occupation Bajoran politics and culture, it's incredibly damning. It's like having been a member of the Communist Party in 1932 when you were 18 and unemployed. Considered logically, that's not a big deal. But in 1955, revelation of

Something that's been troubling me is that we're likely to see the "solution" to the Equalists be for Korra to just kick the shit out of them and then declare victory.

It's kind of funny that, for weeks now, many people here (myself included) sort of assumed that the Metalbender Police were the stand-ins for an actual military. And then, out of nowhere, General "2 Lines" Iroh and the UF show up.
