I'm digging it similarly to the other ones. I'm about 20% in so far. It has the usual multiple story thread thing going on, with flashbacks to childhood times with Chains (who for some reason, I'm picturing as Abe Vigoda.)

Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch. 3rd book in the Gentleman Bastards series. Imagine the Sting, set in Westeros-ian world, and you're getting close.

Cohle did seem more relaxed and talkative and (maybe) even curious about Marty's personal life. All it took was 8 or 9 years of deckhanding while functionally hammered and the dude really lightens up.
