I'd venture to say that those from my generation (I'm 17) interested in culture outside our time are just as numerous as in any time period. As much as it is tempting to "kids these days," the fact is every generation has listened more to what was current.
Plane Crash by the Heats
I downloaded about 185 gigs of music last year; way more than the average person, I'm willing to bet. I'm also willing to bet I spent more money on music than the average consumer, and didn't spend more than a few dollars of that on major label artists.
The guys are amazing live. I had the good fortune of seeing them in a 150 person venue (unitarian church) in January, and they blew the whole crowd away.
Pindrop silence in the quiet songs - they were able to preform songs like Oh My God Charlie Darwin, which they usually cannot because of the general crowd noise.
Seems bleak.
