I think Zhao "death" is somewhat disputed (at the very least it was like Jet, a little unclear…). He's picked up and sort of gently pulled under water. It's still pretty intense, although not intensely violent.

Agreed! The fact that her nature is more earthbender/firebender might also explain why she was able to bend those elements as a kid before being trained in any of them.
