It was just his bad luck of the draw - he wasn't with anyone else he could have sacrificed himself for. I imagine he gritted his teeth, sighed "Aw hell, naw" under his breath after looking at Carol and rolling his eyes, then squared his shoulders to rush in to the feeding frenzy.

I'd forgotten Maggie's face until reading your post - really some good work by all four actors, IMO. Even though I didn't like Lori's character much, I always thought the actor did a pretty admirable job with what she was given, she communicated that brittle, passive-aggressive Steel Magnolia soccer mom well.
