For a while there leading up to Winter Soldier I (and many, many others I'm sure) was expecting Redford to end up being the Red Skull. Given what we've seen the movie-version Tesseract is capable of, I'd be fairly surprised if he doesn't return at some point.

I remember James Spader talking about this on a talk show years ago about his Stargate action figure, and how its build gave him an inferiority complex.
